LIV Golf’s Harold Varner III involved in heated exchange over alleged DWI
Harold Varner III was involved in a fiery exchange on social media with multiple X users who criticised the golfer for allegedly driving whilst impaired.
Varner, one of Dustin Johnson’s 4Aces side, was arrested in late December in the U.S. city of Charlotte.
According to the Mecklenburg County police records, Varner was arrested in Providence Road at 7.24pm on 23 December not far from his listed address.
The records, obtained by GOLF, revealed Varner’s blood content was listed at .16 via a breath test, which is twice the legal limit in North Carolina.
Varner has yet to publicly comment on what happened and why but he did engage multiple social media users on 26 January.
The new LIV Golf season gets underway next week in Mayokoba, Mexico and Varner, along with every other golfer in the rival league, recently took part in a media week to promote the new campaign.
Varner was pictured alongside his new teammates after he transferred from Bubba Watson’s RangeGoats in the off-season.
Varner responded: “Let your imagination run wild.”
Another added: “Definitely wouldn’t surprise me if he’s hitting the bottle. It’s a shame if he is.”
And Varner’s response? “It’s a shame you don’t know.”
It didn’t end there. Another user, DSR, chimed in: “I didn’t take the blood money buddy. You can fool yourself all you want. But you’re not a man unless you stand up to the atrocities your direct bosses are committing.”
The comment was a clear reference to the fact LIV is bankrolled by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
LIV players have been accused of being complicit in attempting to help the Kingdom soften their image globally through sportswashing.
Varner addressed that criticism directly when he left the PGA Tour by admitting his decision to leave was solely about the money.
He also hit the headlines before the 2023 Masters by criticising his fellow LIV players, stating his peers were not ‘growing the game’ but in fact only cared about their bank balances.
Varner replied to the comment from ‘DSR’ by writing: “I hear you DSR. Have a lovely evening. I will have a glass of water for you.”
One user leapt to Varner’s defence by writing: “Like nobody on Twitter ever made a mistake. Miss you on the Tour. Hang in there.”
Varner’s court appearance for the alleged offence was listed for 19 January
