Rory McIlroy Breaks Silence on Media Blackout and Driver Dispute: “I Was Really Frustrated”

Rory McIlroy has finally spoken out following his recent media silence and the controversy surrounding his driver setup, admitting he was deeply frustrated during the period.

After skipping multiple post-round interviews, McIlroy explained the reason behind his media blackout, stating, “I was p—ed off, and I didn’t want to say something I’d regret.” The four-time major champion said he needed time to cool off and reflect before addressing the public and media.

The tension arose following a disappointing performance and ongoing issues with his driver — a key club in his game. Speculation swirled around possible equipment changes and dissatisfaction with his current gear. McIlroy acknowledged the difficulties, hinting that the setup wasn’t performing to his expectations, which only added to his frustrations.

“I care deeply about my game and my results,” McIlroy said. “When things aren’t clicking, it can be incredibly aggravating, especially when it’s something as crucial as the driver.”

Despite the rocky stretch, McIlroy remains optimistic. He’s since returned to speaking with the press and expressed gratitude for the support he’s received from fans and his team.

“I just needed a moment,” he concluded. “Now I’m focused on moving forward and getting back to where I know I can be.”

McIlroy is expected to tee it up next week, aiming to leave the controversy behind and refocus on his game.
