The PNC Championship stands out from other tournaments as it brings golfers and their families together, providing an opportunity to forge lasting memories.
Originally launched in 1995 as the father-son challenge, the event has transformed over the years. It has embraced change by incorporating female golfers, enhancing its prestige. The recent addition of LIV golfers may contribute to its continued growth and significance.
Up until now, the tournament has been exclusive to PGAT and LPGA players. However, with the imminent finalization of the merger, there’s a likelihood that players from the Saudi-backed side may also join the competition starting next year.Next year, LIV golfers might have the opportunity to team up with their families for the PNC Championship.
So far, only PGAT and LPGA players have participated in the PNC Championship. With the imminent merger, there’s a possibility that players from the Saudi-backed side might join the competition starting next year.LIV golfers, who may team up with family for the PNC Championship next year, faced restrictions due to their defector status.
However, if the merger is successfully completed, prominent players from the other side could also be part of the event, provided they meet specific criteria, such as winning a major or the PLAYERS Championship, and their family members not holding a Tour card. Some notable names are mentioned below.
Phil Mickelson: With six major wins already under his belt, Mickelson could easily be a part of the PNC along with his 20-year-old son, Evan Mickelson. If the lefty takes to the greens of the event, then he will become a direct competitor of his old nemesis Tiger Woods.
The Woods boys already have tough competitors in the Daly family who have beaten them in the past. And the inclusion of Mickelson will only make it more interesting.Ian Poulter: A lot would have to align for Poulter to compete at the PNC Championship in 2024. For starters, he would have to qualify for a major (through qualification rounds at the US Open and Open Championship) and then go on to win it, a feat he has often come close to in the past but is yet to attain.
If, however, he does manage the feat in 2024, the LIV star could be seen on the greens with one of his two sons, Joshua and Luke, both of whom are following in his footsteps and have taken a liking to the sport. Luke, in fact, made his college golf debut in September at the Fighting Illini Invitational. So maybe, just maybe, the Polter boys could be seen making their PNC debut next year.
It would indeed be exciting if Windsor decides to follow in her father’s footsteps and join him in the world of golf. The sport often fosters strong family connections, and it’s not uncommon for children to be inspired by their parents’ achievements.
Pairing up with his father for the PNC Championship would undoubtedly be a special and sentimental experience for Cameron Smith, considering the influence his dad had on his early golfing journey. It’s moments like these that add a unique touch to the sport and strengthen family bonds.
Henrik Stenson has the delightful opportunity to choose from his three children for a potential partnership in the PNC Championship. It would indeed be a memorable occasion for both him and his selected child to share the golf course together in such a prestigious event.
