The Houston Rockets, bolstered by young prospects and veteran acquisitions, appeared set for improvement in the 2023-24 season.Alperen Sengun, in his third year, has outshone blue-chip prospects, earning praise from NBA Finals MVP Nikola Jokic.
Some even liken him to a “baby Jokic.”Sengun, an offense-first big man, exhibits advanced skills, scoring both traditionally and with modern methods, earning him high scoring volume rankings.
Averaging 31.9 points per 100 possessions, Sengun also stands out as a great passer, comparable to guards, leveraging his threat to score for effective playmaking.Sengun is among four NBA players averaging 21.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 5.5 assists. With him on the floor, the Rockets’ offensive efficiency significantly improves.
Despite limitations in verticality and agility, Sengun remains serviceable on defense, contributing to the team’s overall success on that end. Comparing Sengun to Jokic at age 21, while they share scoring volume similarities, Jokic displayed greater efficiency, passing ability, and impact on his team.
Despite lofty Jokic comparisons, Sengun, while very good, may not reach Jokic’s level. Nevertheless, he shows promise as a potential All-Star for the Rockets.
