Jon Rahm Backs World Ranking Points for LIV Golf After Strong Showing at Valderrama

Jon Rahm has thrown his support behind the idea that LIV Golf events should be awarded Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) points, following his runner-up finish at LIV Golf Valderrama.

Speaking after the event, Rahm dismissed the notion that LIV tournaments are just exhibitions. “What we saw this week was high-level golf,” he said. “It deserves to be recognized with ranking points. How many? That’s not for me to say… but calling it an exhibition isn’t accurate.”

The former world No. 1 and two-time major champion pointed to the depth of talent in the field and emphasized the importance of giving younger players a pathway to qualify for major championships.

“There are a lot of great young players here who should have the chance to earn their way into the majors,” Rahm said. “The standard of play and the level of competition are good enough to justify OWGR points.”

Since LIV Golf’s launch, the debate over whether its players should be ranked globally has remained a hot topic. Critics often mention the league’s smaller fields and shorter format as disqualifying factors. But Rahm, who joined LIV in 2023, believes the competitive quality is impossible to ignore.

As discussions continue and more big names speak out in favor of change, Rahm’s comments add further pressure on the OWGR system to reconsider its stance. For him, the message is simple — LIV Golf deserves a seat at the table.
