The R&A has made a surprising decision ahead of the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush by keeping the prize fund unchanged from last year. The total purse remains at $17 million, marking the first time since 2012 that the tournament’s payout has not increased.
The champion will receive $3.1 million, with the runner-up earning $1.4 million. Players finishing in the top ten will take home at least $350,600. Payouts continue all the way down to 70th place, where competitors will earn just under $39,000.
This move stands out as most major championships have continued to raise their prize funds in recent years. The R&A explained the decision as part of a broader focus on long-term sustainability and investment in the future of golf, particularly at the grassroots and amateur levels.
By choosing not to follow the escalating prize trends seen in other tournaments, the R&A aims to balance the financial realities of professional golf with the need to support the game globally.
While the Open’s purse now ranks below the Masters, U.S. Open, and PGA Championship, the decision highlights a shift toward strategic financial management, especially during a time of growing competition and changing dynamics within the sport.
