Binaghi Backs Jannik Sinner for Historic Grand Slam Chase Not Seen Since 1969

Jannik Sinner has now won three of the last four Major titles. On Sunday, the Italian secured his first Wimbledon crown by defeating his top rival, Carlos Alcaraz, in four sets after a gripping three-hour, four-minute battle.

The victory triggered a wave of national pride in Italy, especially from Angelo Binaghi, president of the Italian Tennis Federation. Binaghi praised Sinner’s poise and talent, and believes he has what it takes to achieve one of tennis’s most elusive feats — a calendar Grand Slam.

Not since Rod Laver in 1969 has a male player claimed all four Major titles in a single season. Binaghi now sees that milestone within reach for Sinner, thanks to his remarkable consistency and dominance since 2024.

The 23-year-old has captured four of the last seven Grand Slam tournaments, and has also reached a final, a semi-final, and a quarter-final. Since the 2024 US Open, Sinner holds a 27-1 record in Majors, with his only loss coming in a tight match against Alcaraz at Roland Garros.

Celebrating both his accomplishments and potential, Binaghi described Sinner as a “true national treasure” — a symbol of excellence, composure under pressure, and relentless focus.

According to Binaghi, Sinner is not only Italy’s greatest tennis player but also a model for the next generation. He believes Sinner’s character and dedication make him an ideal role model for young Italian athletes.

“Jannik has all the time and opportunity to try to win a Grand Slam in the coming years. Having the best player in the world has changed the history of Italian tennis and sport in general,” Binaghi said.

“Jannik is an extraordinary, wonderful young man, one of the most intelligent I have ever met. If I had to imagine the future Italian champion, he would be like Jannik — solid, consistent, and focused in pivotal moments. If the new Italian generations look to him, the future can only be bright.”
