Shane Lowry Returns to Portrush, Hoping for Another Special Open Moment

Shane Lowry is back at Royal Portrush, fully aware of the mural that captures his iconic 2019 Open Championship win. The large painting on Causeway Street shows him holding the Claret Jug after a dominant six-shot victory that brought joy to Ireland.

Lowry laughs about avoiding the mural on his daily drive but admits it means a lot. “It was a special day for me, my family, and the country,” he said. “I’m still just me—I’m lucky to be good at golf and to have achieved something people remember.”

Though often seen as laid-back, Lowry is deeply focused this week. He’s trained hard on familiar Irish courses and feels ready despite recent struggles, including missing the cut at the U.S. Open. He says he plays best when he’s under pressure and avoids getting too comfortable.

“Sometimes when things go well, I get complacent,” he said. “But when I’m doubting myself, like in 2019, that’s when I lock in.”

Lowry’s trademark grin—now immortalized on a wall—may return by Sunday if he can make history again.
