Golf Star’s Father Declares Ryder Cup Boycott Over Unruly Behavior

The father of top golfer Xander Schauffele is making headlines for his decision to steer clear of the upcoming Ryder Cup, voicing strong disapproval of the tournament’s current state.

In a candid interview with The Times, Stefan Schauffele expressed his frustration with how the U.S. vs. Europe competition has evolved — and his broader dissatisfaction with the PGA Tour.

“Do I miss the PGA Tour? No. I’m not going to the Ryder Cup either,” Stefan said. He cited past incidents, including one in 2021 at Whistling Straits where fans shouted an expletive at Shane Lowry’s wife right in front of him. “I couldn’t believe what I heard,” he added.

Reflecting on the most recent Ryder Cup in Rome, he criticized both the controversy over players’ demands for payment and Rory McIlroy’s heated exchange with U.S. caddie Joe LaCava. “It was disgusting,” Stefan said. “The whole event has become unbearable to watch.”

The Ryder Cup, especially when hosted in the U.S., has developed a reputation for intense fan behavior. With this year’s event set for Bethpage in New York — known for its passionate crowds — Stefan believes it’s best to stay away.

Xander Schauffele, who won two majors last year and currently ranks second in Ryder Cup points behind Scottie Scheffler, is expected to represent the U.S. in September. But while he’ll be competing on the course, it seems his father will be supporting him from afar.
