George Russell Confirms Max Verstappen in Discussions with Mercedes

George Russell has sensationally confirmed that three-time World Champion Max Verstappen is in discussions with Mercedes over a potential move, setting the Formula 1 paddock alight with speculation.

Speaking during a media session ahead of the British Grand Prix, Russell acknowledged the rumors swirling around Verstappen’s future and revealed that conversations between the Dutch driver and Mercedes are “happening behind the scenes.”

“Of course, everyone knows Max is the benchmark right now,” Russell said. “It’s no secret that Toto [Wolff] and the team want the best possible driver lineup, and if there’s a chance to bring Max in, those discussions are going to happen. They already are.”

While Verstappen remains under contract with Red Bull until 2028, growing tension within the team—particularly following the departure of long-time ally Helmut Marko and internal power struggles involving Christian Horner—has fueled speculation that the 26-year-old could seek a fresh challenge elsewhere.

Russell, currently spearheading Mercedes’ rebuilding efforts in the post-Hamilton era, didn’t shy away from the idea of partnering Verstappen.
