In a tense finish at the U.S. Open Final Qualifying event in Columbus, Ohio, Cameron Young emerged victorious in a five-man playoff to claim the final berth for the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club. Young edged out high-profile contenders Max Homa and Rickie Fowler by sinking a 12-foot birdie on the first extra hole, sealing his place in one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments.
The playoff came after Young, Homa, Fowler, Eric Cole, and Chase Johnson all finished 36 holes at five-under-par. Fowler exited the playoff early after a bogey, and Homa—who carried his own bag following a recent split with his caddie—missed crucial putts that cost him both the qualifying spot and the alternate position.
Homa, a six-time PGA Tour winner, had a chance to clinch his place in regulation but three-putted for par on the final hole. His misfortunes continued in the playoff, where a four-putt on the second hole sealed his fate. This ends Homa’s consecutive streak of U.S. Open appearances dating back to 2019. His only remaining opportunity to qualify is to win the RBC Canadian Open and re-enter the top 60 in world rankings.
Fowler, who recently secured a spot in the 2025 Open Championship, missed the green on the first playoff hole and couldn’t recover, resulting in a bogey that knocked him out of contention.
Other players advancing from the Columbus qualifier include Erik van Rooyen, who led the field at 13-under-par, along with Bud Cauley, Lanto Griffin, Justin Lower, and Harrison Ott.
Across North America, 47 players secured their U.S. Open entries during “Golf’s Longest Day.” Notable names like Padraig Harrington, Chez Reavie, Alexander Noren, and Adam Hadwin failed to qualify.
The 2025 U.S. Open will be held at Oakmont Country Club, promising a highly competitive field as players aim for major championship glory.
