5 Big Names Skipping the 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge
The 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge tees off Thursday, May 22, at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. While World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is in the field, several other high-profile golfers will be absent, including World No. 2 Rory McIlroy.
This historic tournament, founded 79 years ago, will see defending champion Davis Riley return after claiming victory last year with a 14-under 266. However, several notable players will not be competing this year.
Here are five major names sitting out the 2025 Charles Schwab Challenge:
1. Rory McIlroy
Rory McIlroy will not be in the field at Colonial after a tough outing at the PGA Championship, where he finished T47 with a three-over 287—his worst performance of the season. The Northern Irishman has otherwise been consistent in 2025 with several top-20 finishes. He is expected to return at the RBC Canadian Open on June 5.
2. Will Zalatoris
Will Zalatoris, a two-time PGA Tour winner, also struggled at the PGA Championship and missed the cut at both majors this year. He withdrew from the Charles Schwab Challenge before it began, with Dylan Wu stepping in as his replacement. Zalatoris’ best finish this season came at the American Express, where he placed T12.
3. Zach Johnson
Veteran golfer Zach Johnson, a two-time major champion, won’t be playing at Colonial either. After skipping the PGA Championship, Johnson also withdrew from this week’s event and will be replaced by Camilo Villegas. Johnson’s highlight this season was a T8 finish at the Masters.
4. Rasmus Hojgaard
Rasmus Hojgaard, who placed T67 at the PGA Championship and T32 at the Masters, also pulled out of the Schwab Challenge on May 16. The Danish golfer, still seeking his first PGA Tour win, has had success on the European and Asian tours. William Mouw will fill his spot.
5. Nicolai Hojgaard
