During the final-round interview at the PGA Championship, CBS Sports reporter Amanda Balionis seemed to take a subtle jab at Rory McIlroy while speaking with Bryson DeChambeau.
McIlroy, 36, avoided all media interactions throughout the four-day event at Quail Hollow — a first in his major championship career. He left the course frustrated after posting a 1-over 72 in the final round, finishing tied for 47th at 3-over par.
Although no official explanation has been given for his media silence, many believe it’s linked to the controversy surrounding his driver. Earlier in the week, McIlroy’s preferred TaylorMade Qi10 driver was ruled non-conforming by the USGA, forcing him to switch to a different club just before the tournament began. His performance appeared to suffer as a result, raising questions about whether he had used the original driver during his Masters win in April.
While McIlroy avoided the spotlight, Balionis appeared to lightly call him out during her post-round chat with DeChambeau, who came in second behind winner Scottie Scheffler. Despite his own disappointment, DeChambeau still fulfilled his media duties and stayed to sign autographs for fans.
Balionis wrapped up the interview by telling DeChambeau, “Thank you for taking the time — I know you don’t have to take the time, but we appreciate it…”
The line didn’t go unnoticed by golf fans online, many of whom interpreted it as a cheeky shot at McIlroy. Social media lit up with comments like, “Anyone else notice Amanda throw shade at Rory then?! Loved it,” and “No chance that wasn’t a subtle dig.”
It seems fans have picked up on what might be a little on-air tension — and are more than happy to speculate about it.
