Lewis Hamilton will start a new chapter by joining Ferrari in 2025 but by then he’ll have already celebrated his 40th birthday, raising question marks over his long-term future in Formula 1
Lewis Hamilton has confirmed that he’s drawn up a ‘plan’ to retire from Formula 1 after questioning his future in the sport.
Seven-time world champion Hamilton will turn 40 in January but he’s still hungry for success. That desire was demonstrated earlier this year when Hamilton made the difficult decision to leave Mercedes after 12 seasons. The Brit has agreed to drive for Ferrari from 2025 onwards after signing a lucrative multi-year deal.
Hamilton has lived and breathed motorsport all of his life but has other passions such as fashion and extreme sports, and is even a producer on Brad Pitt’s new F1 film, which he’s set to make a cameo in. Discussing his future plans in a wide-ranging interview with US magazine Esquire, Hamilton admitted: “There are days I’m like, ‘shoot, I don’t know how much longer I can go’.
“There are days I’m like, ‘shoot, I’d love a break’ because you don’t get a real big break in the season like other sports. You’re not really getting a huge amount of downtime.
, a plan of where I would like to extend to. I’ve just got to strategise and sequence things. Is there a time when I’m not all in, and I’m just not in love with it anymore?
“That’s the moment that hopefully never happens, in the sense that I’ve fallen out of love with it. But I will know when I need to stop. I want to make sure I really max it out while I can and fully enjoy this sport I’ve done my whole life.”
Hamilton, who boasts two Grand Prix wins so far this season, has outlasted some legends of the sport and recently became the fifth-longest-serving driver in F1 history. The 39-year-old, who’s been competing for 17 years, also revealed that he’s spoken to former rivals to help gauge now long he should continue.
