Emma Raducanu has pulled out of the mixed doubles at Wimbledon with Andy Murray due to stiffness in her right wrist – and she’d already questioned the scheduling
Emma Raducanu had suggested the Wimbledon scheduling was a problem for her before pulling out of the mixed doubles with Andy Murray.
The 21-year-old has withdrawn from what was set to be Murray’s last dance at the All England Club, citing “stiffness” in her right wrist. She’s decided to focus on her singles campaign, where she’s cruised into the round of 16 without losing a single set.
It leaves Murray without a partner, and as he can’t seek an alternative, it means his men’s doubles defeat alongside brother Jamie on Thursday was his final Wimbledon outing. Raducanu had previously voiced concerns over the tight scheduling of her matches.
She and Murray were slated to play last on Court No. 1 on Saturday evening, despite her continuing in the singles on Sunday. On Friday, she expressed her frustration with a seven-word statement: “The scheduling of that was not ideal.”
Raducanu went on: “I mean, it’s just an amazing opportunity to be able to play with him. It’s something that I’m going to cherish.” She also revealed that she wasn’t consulted about the match timings, adding: “No, I just came off the court and found out myself.”
It seems the lack of recovery time influenced her decision to step back from the doubles competition, which she confirmed in a statement on Saturday afternoon. Raducanu, whose career has been hampered by wrist issues leading to surgeries on both wrists last year, elaborated on her condition.
Via the Express, she explained: “Unfortunately I woke up with some stiffness in my right wrist this morning, so I have taken the very tough decision to withdraw from the mixed doubles. I’m disappointed as I was really looking forward to playing with Andy, but I’ve got to take care.”
