Max Verstappen was involved in a collision with Lando Norris in the latter stages of the Austrian Grand Prix, ending their chances of a victory.

Max Verstappen’s chances of victory at the Austrian Grand Prix went up in smoke when he came together with McLaren’s Lando Norris.

A clash on lap 64 of the race punctured the Dutchman’s tyre while Norris suffered terminal damage and retired from the race.

Verstappen deflected the blame while Norris asserted the Dutchman turned left while they were in the braking zone.

The stewards deemed that Verstappen was at fault, issuing the three-time world champion a 10-second time penalty and two penalty points on his super licence.

In a statement, the stewards detailed: “Car 1 [Verstappen] was approaching turn 3 with Car 4 [Norris] alongside on his left. Before turning in, the driver of Car 1 moved to the left, causing a collision with Car 4.

“The Stewards determine that the driver of Car 1 was predominantly at fault and therefore impose the above mentioned penalty in line with precedents.”

Verstappen ended the race in fifth place despite the penalty and managed to extend his lead in the drivers’ championship
