Aston Martin ‘sign top Ferrari F1 chief’ amid fight over Adrian Newey

Aston Martin are said to be rivalling Ferrari for the signature
Aston Martin have signed a top designer from Ferrari, as they look to also hijack the Italians’ interest in Adrian Newey

Italy’s Formu1a.uno reports the Silverstone-based squad have snapped up Enrico Cardile from their rivals. The 49-year-old has risen through the ranks at Ferrari to become their head of aerodynamics, but now looks set to make the move to England.

“After some persuasive phone calls and negotiations, the Italian engineer will join Aston Martin,” the report claims. His departure, if confirmed, will be a blow to boss Frederic Vasseur who made Cardile a key part of his top staff at Maranello after his arrival in early 2023.

Ferrari have, though, been on an aggressive recruitment drive themselves. They tried to tempt Pierre Wache to walk away from his role as technical director at Red Bull, though the defending champions responded by tying the Frenchman down to a new contract.

But they were successful in snapping up Loic Serra, who will join from Mercedes and start work in October. According to the report from Italy, he is the one who will take over Cardile’s responsibilities when he leaves the team ahead of his switch to Aston Martin.

It also claims that Cardile’s departure has nothing to do with the fight between the two teams over Newey. But it is clear that they both want to sign the 65-year-old, who is leaving Red Bull having designed eight-title winning cars for the Milton Keynes-based squad.

Newey is in no rush to decide his future, though he has been most strongly linked with Ferrari. And Lewis Hamilton, who is joining the Scuderia from Mercedes next year, has already made it clear he would love to drive cars designed by the Red Bull legend.
