Must watch: Distraught Rory McIlroy in scorer’s hut as Bryson DeChambeau wins US Open

World number three Rory McIlroy endured his latest major heartbreak at the 2024 US Open at Pinehurst No.2 in North Carolina.World number three Rory McIlroy endured his latest disappointment in a major championship at the 2024 US Open. McIlroy had the major in his hands but made bogey on three out of the final four holes at Pinehurst No.2 on Sunday.

Inexplicably, McIlroy missed a par putt from two feet and six inches at the 16th hole. Despite the setback, it looked as though McIlroy was heading for a two-hole playoff with Bryson DeChambeau after the American golfer hooked his tee shot left on the final hole. DeChambeau was leading by one at this stage and could only muscle his golf ball towards the fairway bunker some 54 yards from the hole. However, he got up-and-down for par, producing what he later described as the greatest shot of his life. All the while, a crestfallen McIlroy was watching on from the scorers hut with his caddie Harry Diamond. At the majors this year, he finished T-22 at the Masters and followed that performance with a T-12 at the PGA Championship. McIlroy also finished runner up at the US Open last year in Los Angeles. The Ulsterman was defeated by Wyndham Clark.
