Mercedes Plan More Upgrades As Lewis Hamilton and George Russell target Max Verstappen

George Russell and Lewis Hamilton both got their best results of the season at the Canadian Grand Prix and Toto Wolff thinks Mercedes can make even more progress

Toto Wolff is daring to dream that Mercedes can cement their place back at F1’s top table in the coming weeks.

For so long, the once-dominant Silver Arrows have toiled away with little reward for their efforts – just one race win since 2021, secured by George Russell in Brazil. But Mercedes look to finally have genuine momentum and were contenders for victory in Montreal on Sunday.

Russell started on pole and led for 20 laps but had to settle for third place as Max Verstappen won from Lando Norris. It was the team’s first podium of 2024, while Lewis Hamilton also secured a season-best result by finishing one place behind his team-mate.

A flurry of upgrades in recent weeks has seen them add performance and Mercedes team principal Wolff confirmed more new parts are on the way next time out in Barcelona. He said: “Since Imola we have taken the right steps and put parts on the car that [have worked] and that is something we have struggled with in the last couple of years.

“Directionally we seem to be heading forward. We have new parts coming in Barcelona so I hope we can continue this positive trajectory. “I think the wheel has started to get some real motion now. Bit by bit we have added more performance. “Hopefully the next few races when there is a track you can overtake, it will be exciting.”
