More details have emerged over why world number two Rory McIlroy has filed for divorce from Erica Stoll days before PGA Championship.
Rory McIlroy filed for divorce after seven years with Erica Stoll after their marriage became ‘irretrievably broken’, according to a report.
The fresh revelation came from the New York Post.
McIlroy has also ‘retained Thomas Sasser’ as his attorney, according to Sports Illustrated.
Sasser represented Tiger Woods during his divorce to Elin Nordegren in 2010 after his extramarital affairs were exposed.
SI have further reported there is a prenuptial agreement between McIlroy and Erica.
It was confirmed on 14 May that McIlroy had submitted a ‘petition for dissolution of marriage’ in Palm Beach County, Florida, 24 hours after he claimed his 26th PGA Tour title at the Wells Fargo Championship.
The couple tied the knot in 2017 and have a four-year-old daughter called Poppy.
McIlroy’s agent Sean O’Flaherty confirmed to BBC Sport the first report of their divorce by TMZ.
He stressed McIlroy’s desire to ensure ‘this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible’.
Rory met Erica during the 2012 Ryder Cup at Medinah.
Erica worked for the PGA of America and helped McIlroy rush to the course after he misread his Sunday tee time.
The Northern Irishman made it to his match against Keegan Bradley with just minutes to spare.
McIlroy then defeated Keegan Bradley 2&1 as Europe battled from 10-6 down to win the Cup.
Over the years Erica has maintained a low profile.
She has been frequently pictured at major championships and Ryder Cups supporting McIlroy.
McIlroy is due to speak to the media on 15 May ahead of the 2024 PGA Championship.
He will be playing the first two rounds of the second men’s major of the year alongside LIV Golf’s Dustin Johnson and former world number one Justin Rose.
