The 35-year-old managed to reel in Xander Schauffele before the turn in the final round and then put his foot on the gas on the back nine at Quail Hollow Club.
In the end, McIlroy reached a four-round total of 17-under par, which was good enough for a five-stroke win over his American rival.

His stunning win marked the fourth occasion he has won at Quail Hollow.
He previously won the Wells Fargo Championship in 2010, 2015 and 2021.
The victory came one week before the second men’s major of the year.
As the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship was a ‘signature’ event, it meant the tournament had an inflated prize purse of $20,000,000.
That meant McIlroy scooped a mega $3,600,000 for the win.
Overall, McIlroy has now won $86,696,279 in official PGA Tour prize money.

Played over 9-12 May, the Wells Fargo Championship represents the sixth signature event of the 2023-2024 campaign.
That means the prize purse has been inflated to a whopping $20,000,000.
The winner will walk away with a cheque for $3,600,000.
Wyndham Clark is the defending champion here but there are a number of star names in the field, including the likes of Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, Xander Schauffele, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.
World number one Scottie Scheffler is not in the field because his wife Meredith is expecting to give birth to their first child any day now.
And Ludvig Aberg also had to withdraw before the event, citing a knee injury.
That means the field was reduced to 69 players, with each competitor receiving a payout because this is a no-cut event.
