Xander SchauffeleA number of golf fans on X appeared to agree that PGA Tour pro Xander Schauffele does not like Sundays after his performance at Quail Hollow.Death, taxes, and Xander Schauffele not being able to get over the line on Sundays with a PGA Tour title or major championship on the line. At least that is the verdict from a number of golf fans on X who expressed dismay with Schauffele’s final round performance at the Wells Fargo Championship.
Schauffele began the final round with a one-shot lead over Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy but looked as though every hole was swallowing him up on Sunday at Quail Hollow Club. The American made the turn at 1-under but quickly went backwards with devastating, back-to-back bogeys at 12 and 13 to effectively end his chances of claiming the signature event. McIlroy turned the screw with an eagle at the 10th, made more birdies at 13 and 14 and, by the time the duo got to the 14th tee the Ulsterman had a five-shot lead. That increased to seven after McIlroy holed out from the sand for another sublime eagle at the par-5 15th.
Before the Wells Fargo Championship, Schauffele had amassed a whopping eight runner-up finishes in his career. That did not go unnoticed as the final round played out. “Death, taxes and Xander Schauffele s—ing down his legs on Sunday,” one X user wrote. Another added: “Quite the sporting scene in Charlotte. Rory McIlroy is reducing Xander Schauffele to a quivering wreck. Slapping him around the face with a wet kipper….”
This person wrote: “Xander Schauffele has totally lost the plot. As well as Rory has played, he hasn’t put any pressure on him.” I’ve dogged on Quail Hollow in the past, but no greater proof that this is a big tournament than Xander Schauffele melting like a wax candle down the stretch
