The current titleholder in Formula One has expressed his sentiments regarding Mercedes as the upcoming season approaches.
Max Verstappen has affirmed that Mercedes, led by Lewis Hamilton, will stand as one of Red Bull’s primary rivals in the upcoming season. Despite securing a comfortable victory in this year’s season, the reigning F1 world champion anticipates a more closely contested race in the coming year.
In 2023, Verstappen had his most successful season to date, achieving a remarkable 19 wins and 21 podium finishes. His on-track dominance earned him a total of 575 points, securing a substantial lead of 290 points over his Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez.
Verstappen’s commanding campaign in 2023 exceeded his previous record of 15 wins from the previous season. Furthermore, his points record significantly surpassed Sebastian Vettel’s notable 155-point lead in 2013.
Securing his third consecutive win, Verstappen’s performance indicates that the 26-year-old is consistently improving and poised to outshine his competitors in the years ahead. However, in an unexpected turn, Verstappen has hinted at potential challenges in the upcoming season due to stiff competition from Red Bull’s rivals.
Verstappen expressed to NOS that replicating the same level of success in the upcoming season would be nearly impossible. He acknowledged the ongoing efforts to enhance their car but highlighted the challenge as other teams have learned from Red Bull. Verstappen expressed anticipation for increased competition, noting the dynamic performance of various teams, citing McLaren as an example with skilled individuals contributing to their progress.
Verstappen has acknowledged concerns about more than just Mercedes for the upcoming season. The Red Bull driver specifically identified two additional teams poised to disrupt the competition and pose a threat to the established order.
Verstappen emphasized that the competition is automatically expected to be more closely contested in the upcoming season, as seen in the final races of the previous season where qualifying was notably challenging.
Despite the anticipated intensity, Verstappen, driven by substantial financial incentives, aims to have another prosperous year.
Following the last race, a Forbes report disclosed that the F1 star earned an astounding $70 million (£55m), comprising a base salary of $45 million (£35m) and a bonus of $25 million (£19m).
