The third-ranked golfer and Masters champion, Jon Rahm, acknowledged that his shift from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf was influenced by the attractive offers from the Saudi-funded tour.
Rahm confirmed the move on Fox News, wearing a LIV jacket, though he didn’t disclose the specific amount he’s being paid for the switch.
Describing it as a challenging decision, Rahm mentioned that LIV presented compelling offerings that played a significant role.
His reported deal with LIV is believed to be around $500 million (£400 million), making him the highest-paid golfer on their roster, with potential earnings exceeding $570 million (£450 million) based on his tour performance.
This deal surpasses LIV’s second-largest contract, held by Phil Mickelson at $200 million.Dustin Johnson reportedly received $150 million to join LIV, while Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka each received $100 million.
Rahm emphasized that his move aimed to contribute to growing the game, expressing ambition rather than greed. He highlighted his interest in team golf, a central aspect of LIV’s format, recalling his time playing for the Spanish national team and Arizona State during college.
Rahm stated, “Being part of a team has been significant for me throughout my career,” emphasizing the enjoyment of playing for a cause beyond oneself.
Despite not always favoring this format, Rahm admitted in a previous interview to initially laughing off speculations about leaving the PGA Tour for LIV.
