In a candid assessment of Red Bull’s performance and aspirations for the upcoming 2024 season, Max Verstappen, who spearheaded the team to both drivers’ and constructors’ titles in 2023, highlighted areas where improvements could fortify their dominance on the Formula 1 circuit.
Despite a stellar 2023 campaign that witnessed Verstappen clinch victory in an impressive 19 out of 22 races and Red Bull securing triumph in all but one, the Dutch driver acknowledges the imperative of continuous development.
With rivals showing signs of progress as the season unfolded and a busy winter of preparations underway for the impending campaign, Verstappen remains keenly aware of the target on Red Bull’s back.
When queried about the magnitude of improvements needed to sustain their advantage, Verstappen responded, “It’s difficult to tell, but, of course, we are also working on our car to try and make it better.” He elucidated further, indicating a strategic focus on both addressing weaknesses and amplifying existing strengths to stay ahead in the highly competitive field.
Verstappen identified specific areas of vulnerability, notably pointing to Red Bull’s performance at Singapore’s Marina Bay, the lone event in 2023 where they fell short.
Additionally, he emphasized challenges faced on street tracks in general, citing low-speed dynamics as an aspect requiring attention. The mention of Singapore, where Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz seized an opportunity, marked a rare off-weekend for the typically dominant Red Bull.
“Look at our race weekend in Singapore. In general, on street circuits, I think we are struggling a bit more, like in Vegas also,” Verstappen remarked. “Low-speed is definitely not our strongest point in the car, [going over] bumps, kerbs as well, so that’s definitely a big area where we can improve.”
The acknowledgment of weaknesses underscores Red Bull’s commitment to a comprehensive strategy for enhancement, ensuring that the RB19 package evolves to surmount challenges in diverse race scenarios.
As the team navigates the intricate landscape of Formula 1, Verstappen’s insights provide a glimpse into the meticulous planning and dedication required to maintain a competitive edge in the pursuit of excellence on the global racing stage.
